Canoes and Classic Boats

The Skerries Yawl is a 22' sailing boat.  The boat is constructed with a GRP hull using one of the last traditional fishing boats of the north coast of Ireland as a mould.  The hull is fitted out in a combination of larch and hardwoods with traditional sails and rigging in keeping with its traditional origins.

The Fibreglass canoes are moulded GRP in either the classic 'Prospector' design or a broader 'Erne Tourer' design.  They can be fitted out in a variety of timbers depending on the individual budget.  Both boats benefit from the sturdy structure of the combined fibreglass and timber construction and have the characteristic smooth low friction flow over the water.

Both models can be fitted out for canoe sailing.

With a Lapstrake canoe the overlapping planking provides additional strength and rigidity which is further increased though the use of epoxy resin fillets along all seams and a cloth layer on the exterior hull.  The boats are made from either 4 or 6 mm plywood using the stitch and glue technique and are lighter than an equivalent plastic boat.  Valkyrie Craft produce two standard canoes, however they can be developed from almost any canoe design.

These classic boats are the latest addition to our range.  They are the absolute cream of the open canoe experience being the most beautiful, the most responsive and the best..... for confirmation check with Bill Mason.   They are based on the voyager trader boats of the American north melding the best of the native boat tradition and western technology and tools.

We can build boats to a wide range of specifications but our current stock design is a 16ft classic prospector.

The boat can be finished in traditional filled and painted canvas, or for lighter weight epoxy, glass cloth and paint.

These canoes can also be developed from almost any canoe design.  Each boat is built using thin timber / wooden strips on a temporary frame.  The finished hull is sheathed in fibreglass cloth and finished with gunnels, seats and decks.  The boats can be made from a range of woods, depending on budget, the most common choice being cedar.
