Choice of paddle length for Canadian canoes

Choice of a canoe paddle depends mainly on your height and partly on your position in the boat.  Paddling solo or in the stern is more comfortable with a longer paddle while paddling in the bow is often more comfortable with a shorter paddle.

There are a number of slightly different ways to decide on the best length but a well established rule of thumb is to choose a paddle with a total length that would reach from the ground up to a point mid way between the breast line and the collar bone.
Another rough guide is to kneel down and hold your right arm out so that it is parallel to the ground.  This is the length of the paddle from the handle to the paddle neck.

Choice of paddle length for Kayaking

Choosing the best paddle length for a kayak is very dependant on the style of boat and type of paddling you take part in.  A wider boat or a trip covering a long distance with a slow paddle rate will be more comfortable with a longer paddle.  Narrow boats can be paddled comfortably with a shorter paddle and high output sprint paddling can also benefit from a shorter paddle and a more upright style.

As a general guide paddlers height under 5' 4" use a 215-220cm paddle; 5' 4" to 6' use a 220-230cm paddle; and over 6' use 230-250cm.
